Bare tree

The Fragile Summer

Veluwezoom NP, NL -

True fine art photography often explores the tension between beauty and decay. Returning to this lone, dying tree a few weeks after my initial monochrome study, I was captivated by how its elegant, tortuous trunk now stood defiantly against a vibrant evening sun. To elevate the scene, I used a circular polariser filter to enrich the deep blue sky, creating a bold canvas that forces the bare branches into sharp relief. This image serves as a final visual reminder of impermanence — a quiet acknowledgment that this fragile monument may not survive the next great storm.

The Impending Silence

Veluwezoom, NL -

True fine art photography often explores the subtle, early signs of transition. Captured during the height of summer, this monochrome study documents the exact moment I realised this lone tree was fading away. Whilst the surrounding fields were full of life, its branches remained completely bare against a heavy, leaden sky. Stripping the scene of colour emphasizes the stark, graphic silhouette and that beautiful, distinctive bend in the trunk.

Chasing Light in the Countryside

Tarn-et-Garonne, FR -

Landscape photography is often enriched by the unexpected connections we make along the way. While setting up my tripod by the edge of this vast field, my presence caught the attention of the friendly French land owner, who came over to observe my work. The rewards of that quiet afternoon are evident in the composition; a heavy, dramatic ceiling of clouds creates a striking backdrop for a solitary tree and adjacent hay bales, all perfectly spotlighted by the setting sun to carve out a beautiful depth across the rolling terrain.

Graphic simplicity in the Dutch landscape: an island of trees in a frozen sea of fog.

Island of Trees

NP Hoge Veluwe, NL -

A study of winter isolation and graphic harmony. This image documents a sub-zero January morning where the landscape was distilled down to its bare essentials. The heavy fog cleared away all background distractions, isolating a small group of trees like a sanctuary in the mist. By pairing this atmospheric void with a highly detailed, frost-covered foreground, the photo bridges the gap between the tactile crispness of the grass and the soft, infinite silence of the sky.

The Distance Between

Veluwezoom NP, NL -

Early hours in the fog. The absence of colour in the landscape naturally led me to a black and white composition. Through this photograph, I aimed to explore perspective: using the strong contrast of the immediate hillside to ground the image, while the rolling fog creates a soft, layered transition toward the isolated tree in the background.

Tangible Silence

Schaarsbergen, NL -

In the presence of fog, even the most familiar landscapes reveal a hidden poetry. This spot, just a short distance from home, normally blends into the everyday background, but the lingering mist brought a profound sense of quietude. Through a black and white lens, I sought to explore the natural layers of the woodland. By balancing the dark, detailed textures of the foreground trees against the fading silhouettes in the distance, I aimed to invite the viewer down the path into a world of absolute silence.

To get conditions like this, you need not only sunlight but also humid, cold air. The best moments, in my opinion, occur approximately an hour after sunrise, when the sun is a bit higher in the sky. This morning the great conditions lasted about half an hour, so lots of opportunities to capture some nice shots. 😁 It's often a struggle to get a decent shot in the woodlands without too much distracting clutter in the frame. A long lens can help to isolate the subject.

Chasing the Light

Hoge Veluwe NP, NL -

Capturing light rays in the forest requires patience and the right elements: crisp morning air, lingering humidity, and low sunlight. Roughly an hour after sunrise, the forest transformed for a brief thirty minutes. Woodland photography is often a patient struggle against visual clutter. By deliberately choosing a longer lens, I aimed to isolate the trees and compress the perspective, translating a chaotic environment into a timeless display of light and shadow.

Winter Mood

Hoge Veluwe NP, NL -

True landscape photography is often about what you choose to leave out of the frame. On a freezing, drizzly morning, the fog naturally simplified the background, highlighting the graphic silhouette of the backlit beech tree against the golden grass. Because the winter sky was far too bright and distracting for a balanced exposure, I utilised a telephoto lens to compress the scene. By isolating just a fraction of the landscape, the composition shifts focus away from the chaotic horizon and into the delicate, quiet details of the forest.

Autumn Vibes

Veluwezoom, NL -

On a crisp November morning, a beautiful, hazy atmosphere enveloped the woods as the sun climbed higher into the sky. I tried to utilise the intense backlight to transform the autumn mist into a glowing canvas, highlighting the deep, textured silhouette of the dark tree trunk and its fiery canopy. By using the overhanging, colourful leaves to naturally frame the sun-drenched clearing in the distance, the composition creates an immense sense of depth, effortlessly drawing the viewer's eye down the winding forest path.

This lone tree is just.....well....a lone tree in the landscape. But when the sky, clouds, and light team up, bam! Suddenly, it's a killer photo moment. 😁

Solitary Light

Hoge Veluwe NP, NL -

A study in isolation. This lone tree stands as a solitary anchor in a vast horizon, but it is the weather that truly brings the composition to life. I watched the elements converge as a heavy wall of clouds formed a dramatic backdrop, pierced by soft rays of light. In monochrome, the chaotic energy of the storm is distilled into a quiet, impactful moment of fine-art minimalism.

Brooding Sky

Drenthe, NL -

To capture a scene with a dark and moody atmosphere, patience is essential — sometimes requiring to stand in the pouring rain, waiting for the light to break through. Such was the case on this quiet morning. Having noticed this distant pair of trees a few days prior, I had envisioned a specific composition. The flat landscape initially lacked a compelling foreground element, but I eventually stumbled upon a small ridge that added a pleasing sense of dimension and depth. I patiently waited for the light to concentrate right behind the two trees, allowing their isolated silhouettes to gently stand out against the heavy elements.

Long exposure black and white photo of a windmill in The Netherlands

The Shape of the Wind

Drenthe, NL -

When a pale evening sky offeres very little colour, a monochrome conversion allowes the pure form of this Dutch windmill to dominate the frame. To elevate the scene, a long exposure was used to blur the passing clouds, capturing a tangible sense of the wind that drives both the sky and the sails. Those sails, resting momentarily in a perfect cross, signal a brief pause in the miller's day, transforming an everyday cultural landmark into an evocative, peaceful dialogue in greyscale.

The Gnarled Core

The Gnarled Core

Veluwezoom NP, NL -

The beauty of a lingering fog is the patience it grants you to look closer. Following my first discovery just ten minutes prior, I noticed this remarkably gnarled and twisted trunk standing in stark relief. Through the natural simplification of the landscape, the rest of the forest fades away, leaving this dark, fractured form as the ultimate focal point. It completes a brief, ten-minute dialogue between unexpected movement and absolute silence.

The Exceptions of Fog

Veluwezoom, NL -

When the morning fog blankets a forest, it acts as a natural canvas that strips away chaos and reveals pure stillness. This environment invites me to look for that one object that boldly breaks the rule of its surroundings. In this monochrome composition, the tortuous curve of a single trunk disrupts the rigid, vertical grid of the pines. It is a visual study of tranquility, documenting the first of two unique exceptions I discovered within just ten minutes in these quiet woods.

Birch tree and blooming heather in the fog

Fading Colours

Veluwezoom, NL -

Mist has the unique ability to transform a cluttered horizon into an abstract masterpiece. Walking the moorland in early September, I was captivated by how the heavy fog isolated this solitary tree, forcing the vibrant purple of the blooming heather into sharp focus. Without the fog to dissolve the background distractions, the frame would lose its profound sense of stillness. It stands as the colourful first chapter of a visual experiment, where I would return to recreate it in black and white one year later.

Lone tree on the heath

The Art of Waiting

Veluwe, NL -

Standing by the bike path with my tripod set, I patiently wait for the ideal light. In moments like this, passersby often stop to ask if I have spotted anything — usually expecting a piece of wildlife. My quiet reply is always, 'No, just a tree.' Yet behind the lens, I am trying to translate a specific vision. For me, photography is not solely about freezing an existing moment of beauty, but about quietly conjuring that beauty within the frame. And throughout that creative process, I never forget to simply savour the tranquil stillness of being outdoors. Even when dealing with the relentless midges.

Tree stump in a Sanddune with nice moving clouds

Sixteen Stops of Silence

Hoge Veluwe NP, NL -

This composition was born from a conscious decision to reject visual noise in search of serenity. I spent an hour watching the sky cycle through rain and passing rainbows, but the dense, heavy clouds made the frame feel too cluttered for my liking. As twilight approached and the light turned golden, the atmosphere shifted. Through the extreme use of a sixteen-stop filter combination, I transformed that messy afternoon sky into long, peaceful brushstrokes, anchoring this stump in a timeless evening landscape.

The Directed Sky

Hoge Veluwe NP, NL -

Photography is often a patient game of waiting for the perfect alignment of independent elements. Having already set up my tripod and locked in the composition of this fallen, skeletal tree, I spent some time watching the sky. The air was crisp and blue, punctuated only by a few drifting, fluffy clouds. I waited until one singular cloud floated into the frame, precisely where the tree's upward-reaching branch points toward the sky — a rewarding moment where nature and calculated composition seamlessly met.

Countryside

Burgundy, FR -

Landscape photography is often defined by patience and finding that one perfect vantage point. Whilst exploring the French countryside in spring, I discovered a single, precise spot along a quiet provincial road that offered this exact view. With my tripod firmly positioned and the composition locked in, I immersed myself in the absolute stillness of the morning, watching the sun play hide-and-seek with the clouds. It was a rewarding game of patience; I waited until a beam of beautiful morning sunlight peeked through the gaps, spotlighting the solitary tree and its rolling green slope at the exact split second required.

Although I passed by this scene many times before, it never caught my eye. But this time however,  the heath was backlit in a beautiful manner by the early morning sun, creating the hazy effect I was looking for. This sapling stood out nicely against the bright background and therefore caught my attention. Beautiful light often can make a scene work. 😃

Backlit Sapling

Hoge Veluwe NP, NL -

The most rewarding images are often born from everyday locations waiting for their perfect moment. Under a clear sky, this small tree blends seamlessly into the background noise of the woods. But when enveloped in a mix of morning mist and golden backlight, the entire narrative changes. The sharp lines of the branches are thrown into beautiful relief against the glowing fog, creating a deep sense of scale and transforming a quiet path on the heath into a striking, minimalist visual.

Sometimes, the simplest objects possess the power to anchor an entire landscape. Capturing the coastal twilight on the island of Texel just moments before sundown, I was drawn to the layered, dramatic gradients of red and orange bleeding through the evening sky. To balance this immense expanse, I utilised a solitary beach pole to disrupt the endless horizon. This subtle vertical element gives the eye a place to rest, transforming a vast, empty seascape into a calculated study of minimalist harmony.

Landscape photography is a game of millimeters when working with the setting sun. Captured on a warm August evening, I used the vibrant patches of blooming heather as an inviting foreground to guide the eye toward the ridge. By meticulously positioning my tripod so the sun would peek out from just behind the thick tree trunk, the lens generated a magnificent, sharp sunstar. The crystal-clear blue sky offers a pristine backdrop, creating a powerful contrast that forces the dark silhouettes of the trees and the sun-drenched textures of the hillside into sharp, brilliant relief.

Pulling over immediately, I managed to capture this handheld shot just in time. Skógafoss, 25 meters wide and 60 meters high. Pretty impressive to be standing in front of this huge phenomenon. Although it's a pretty obvious subject to photograph, you can't get around this when visiting Iceland. We visited this location late in the evening to take advantage of better light and to avoid the crowd. During the day it's almost impossible to take photos without people in the shot. Almost as crowdy as Piccadilly Circus subway station during rush hour. 😅 Such a fascinating sight / site to visit. Sometimes you have to be very patient. Even during the evening there were still lots of people gazing at this wonder of nature. I managed to get just two people in the shot to emphasize the impressive size of this beautiful waterfall. 😃

Skógafoss

Plunging 60 metres, Skógafoss is an immense phenomenon that is impossible to bypass when visiting Iceland. To avoid the dense daytime crowds and take advantage of the softer evening light, we visited late in the day. Even during the evening, patience was required as visitors continued to marvel at the cascade. By waiting for the perfect window, I managed to capture just two figures at the base — a deliberate composition that beautifully emphasizes the staggering, majestic scale of this natural wonder.

Vikurkirkja

Vik, Iceland -

Standing on the famous black sand beach, I captured this shot handheld due to the fierce Icelandic wind. While this iconic church is known for its brightly coloured red roof, I consciously chose a black and white presentation to emphasise form over colour. The harsh afternoon light and deep sky provided the ideal canvas for a monochrome conversion; stripping away the red allows the pristine white structure to become a geometric anchor, standing out dramatically against the dark, sweeping lines of its volcanic surroundings.

Gullfoss

Iceland -

An immense volume of water plunges in two dramatic stages into a 32-metre-deep crevice, with this composition focusing entirely on the raw energy of the first tier. Photographing this iconic waterfall was a formidable challenge. Despite a magnificent sky broken by patches of blue, a fierce wind constantly swept across the canyon, throwing up a relentless spray of icy cold water. Combined with the low temperatures that day, conditions were far from ideal. I deliberately opted for a longer exposure to soften the roaring torrent, a technical feat that required immense patience to execute without a single droplet on the front lens ruining the shot.

During our journey through Iceland, whilst exploring the Snæfellsnes peninsula, we made a detour to Búðakirkja — perhaps the most iconic and photographed church in the country. It is no surprise that Kirkjufell and its accompanying waterfalls stand as one of Iceland's most iconic locations. My primary objective with this composition was to unite the fluid motion of Kirkjufellsfoss and the distinctive architecture of the mountain within a single, cohesive frame. Utilising a long exposure allowed me to smooth the roaring cascade into silk, creating a calming contrast against the rugged volcanic terrain. In woodland photography, a clean composition is everything. I always strive to position my tripod so that the tree trunks don't merge, as overlapping lines can easily disrupt the balance of an image. Experiencing a morning where thick mist and heavy frost perfectly align is a rare privilege, and the immediate challenge was to slow down rather than rush the moment. Although I had passed these skeletal trees countless times before, the background noise had always been far too distracting. This time, the winter fog effortlessly isolated them. Using a wide-angle lens to give the clouds the space they deserved, I waited until the sunlight pierced through, bathing the field in vibrant orange and yellow hues and stretching the tree's shadow across the grass.

Sometimes, the most powerful elements in photography are born from pure serendipity. While I was busy capturing the dramatic, churning sky behind one of my favourite local trees at sunset, these two figures walked into the frame. I waited for the precise second they crossed between the setting sun and my lens, transforming them into sharp silhouetted anchors. Their presence not only heightens the story within the landscape but lends a striking sense of scale to the solitary tree.

Fleeting Warmth

Veluwezoom, NL -

Just before sunset, the sky transformed as the low sun painted the heavy clouds with warm, golden tones. In a vast landscape with very few options for positioning, finding the right composition was a challenge. This viewpoint perfectly frames the lone tree against the immense sky, capturing a quiet and beautiful transition of light.

Breaking Light

Veluwezoom, NP -

Standing alone on a gentle slope, this tree has become a familiar friend in my photography. To capture it framed by the setting sun requires precise timing and alignment. On this particular evening, the sky provided the ultimate drama. As the saying goes, "A great sunset needs a cloudy sky" — the heavy clouds didn't block the light, but rather shaped it, sending brilliant beams of gold piercing through the darkness.

Against the Elements

NP Veluwezoom, NL -

What most people call bad weather, landscape photographers call the perfect opportunity. This image was captured in the middle of the day during a heavy downpour, under a bruised sky of dark, dramatic clouds. Getting soaked was a small price to pay while waiting for that single, fleeting moment when the sunlight finally broke through. To isolate the solitary tree against the stormy sky, composition was critical. There was only one exact spot to place my tripod — low to the ground in a small dip in the landscape — ensuring the horizon remained clean and the branches didn't merge with the land behind.

Split tree with sun in between during sunset

Split

Deelerwoud, NL -

This image is the result of careful calculation, scouting, and patience. After passing this fractured tree multiple times, I used sun-tracking apps to calculate that the setting sun would only align perfectly between the two trunks during two brief windows each year. After several unsuccessful attempts over previous seasons, the conditions finally came together on this particular evening. It was a meticulous process to position my tripod at the exact angle required. Initially, the sun was too bright and harsh, but as it dipped lower, the atmosphere filtered the light beautifully — transforming the glare into a soft, glowing orange sphere suspended perfectly between the twin silhouettes.

After taking some photos of this nice windmill in the stunning early morning light just after sunrise, I was patient enough to hang around for a while. After an hour or so the sun climbed and these gorgeous sunbeams cracked the sky and clouds.

The Gathering Light

Normandy, FR -

True landscape photography rewards those who linger after the initial magic has passed. Roughly an hour after capturing the fiery sunrise behind Moulin de Moidrey, the sun climbed higher, and the atmosphere shifted entirely. I chose a high-contrast monochrome conversion to isolate the raw drama of the elements. Patience was the key to this composition; just as the heavy morning clouds threatened to close in, these spectacular sunbeams broke through the fractured sky, casting a theatrical curtain of light over the historic mill.

Moulin de Moidrey

Landscape photography is often a game of anticipation and calculated geometry. Arriving at this historic location a half hour before dawn, I knew the sun would break the horizon directly behind the mill, and I positioned my tripod to capture that exact alignment. After a tense wait in the dark, the sky fractured into a spectacular display of fiery orange and deep gold. This image captures that fleeting transition, where the heavy morning clouds are dramatically illuminated by the first light of day.

Dancing Clouds

Dancing clouds

Normandy, FR -

As the sun began to set over Mont Saint-Michel, the sky unexpectedly stole the show. The moment I saw these unique clouds drift into view, I knew they had to be the focus of the frame. Catching the warm, golden light of the setting sun, they look like whimsical little ghosts dancing across the sky. While the historic abbey provides a timeless backdrop, it is this fleeting choreography in the air that truly inspired me.

Le Mont Saint Michel

Le Mont Saint Michel

Normandy, FR -

Landscape photography often requires walking away from the beaten track to discover a completely fresh perspective. Exploring the surroundings of Le Mont-Saint-Michel early in the morning, I took a wide detour that led me behind a vast cornfield. I was instantly inspired by the warm, golden sunlight catching the crop and the ancient abbey. By intentionally placing the vibrant cornfield in the foreground, I covered the tourist-heavy lower ramparts, framing the iconic spire as a majestic island rising out of a golden sea.

Moody morning photograph of some blooming heather, trees and mist

August Awakening

Veluwezoom NP, NL -

Getting up early is always rewarding when you are treated to a perfect blend of morning mist and soft sunlight. This summer was defined by an exceptional drought, yet the landscape showed its resilience; patches of vibrant heather still managed to bloom, introducing rich purple tones to the foreground. The combination of the delicate mist dissolving in the distance and the warm dawn light filtering through the trees created a wonderfully soft, peaceful scene.

Winter Mist

Winter mist

Veluwezoom, NP, NL -

Captured during a bitterly cold dawn, this image freezes a moment of absolute stillness. The heavy winter mist acts as a natural studio backdrop, isolating the elements and creating a beautiful, graphic structure. The intricate, frost-covered branches in the foreground anchor the scene, while the skeletal shapes of the distant forest blend softly into the pale background.

Lone tree at sunrise

Dawn Tree

Posbank, NL -

Finding a solitary tree that stands perfectly against the sky without any distracting background elements is a challenge in the famously flat landscape of the Netherlands. To achieve this composition, I headed to National Park Veluwezoom, where push moraines from the last glacial period create rare, rolling hills. By carefully planning my tripod placement ahead of sunrise, I aimed to capture the sun directly behind this bare tree, deliberately positioning it off-centre in the lower left to create a more dynamic sense of visual tension. Although heavy clouds blocked the sun itself, they provided a dramatic, brooding canvas that perfectly emphasizes the fiery morning glow.

Silhouette

Texel, NL -

A cold morning on the island of Texel. By intentionally underexposing the foreground, the village is turned into a clean silhouette, allowing the unique and iconic shape of Den Hoorn's church to anchor the frame. A minimalist composition where the cold of the dyke meets the incredible warmth of a golden sunrise.
